If you fuel a truck, you already know: 2026 has been the most expensive diesel year on record.
The numbers
- In early 2026 diesel jumped more than 40% in under two months. In the week of March 9 alone, the U.S. average rose about 96 cents, from $3.90 to $4.86 a gallon.
- In mid-May the average was about $5.60, up 58% from a year earlier.
- AAA reported a record national average of just under $6.27 on September 15, 2026, and some Los Angeles stations posted more than $8.
- The EIA national average was $6.352 for the week ending October 26, 2026, about $2.63 higher than a year earlier.
The war in the Middle East and attacks on Russian refineries tightened supply, and diesel rose faster than gasoline or crude oil.
Who feels it, and how
Company drivers. You do not buy the fuel, so your paycheck does not drop directly. But carriers working on margins under 1% look for savings elsewhere: fewer miles, slower trucks, tighter idle rules, frozen raises. In late August and early September 2026, 16 trucking companies filed for bankruptcy within about 30 days, and diesel was one of the main reasons.
Owner-operators. Your fuel surcharge decides if you survive. Many contracts reset the surcharge monthly or quarterly, which is far too slow when prices jump in one week. Ask how often it resets and what base price it uses.
Lease-purchase drivers. This is the riskiest seat right now. You pay the truck note, insurance and fuel, while the company sets the rate. If you are thinking about lease purchase, read our lease-purchase warning first.
How to protect yourself when picking a job
- Choose stable freight. Dedicated accounts with one big shipper usually keep moving when spot freight dries up. We have 164 dedicated jobs in our database right now.
- Ask about miles, not just cents. A carrier cutting miles to save fuel can cost you more than a 3-cent raise brings in.
- Ask the recruiter directly: "Have you parked trucks or cut miles this year?" A good recruiter will tell you.
- Local and home-daily work is less exposed to fuel swings. The median weekly pay for local jobs in our database is $1,550.
- Idle less, earn more. APU, idle limits and fuel bonuses are back in fashion. Ask if there is a fuel-efficiency bonus.
Our take
Fuel is now the number one concern in trucking, ahead of lawsuits and insurance, according to ATRI's 2026 survey. Carriers with strong customers will get through it. The ones living load to load will not. Your job is to land at the first kind.
