Every driver knows the feeling: hours left on the clock, but every lot within 50 miles is full by 7 PM.
How big the problem is
Truck parking ranks near the top of ATRI's annual list of industry concerns every year, and it is in drivers' own top two. There are far fewer truck parking spaces than trucks on the road at night, and the shortage is worst near big cities and along major corridors. Drivers lose time and money every week by stopping early just to get a spot.
How experienced drivers deal with it
- Plan the stop before you plan the drive. Know your first, second and third parking option before you leave.
- Use the apps that show real-time space counts at truck stops and rest areas.
- Reserve when it matters. Many chains sell reserved spots. On a tight schedule, it can be worth it.
- Stop earlier near big cities. Parking fills fastest within an hour of major metros.
- Never park on ramps or shoulders. It is dangerous and can get you a ticket.
What to ask a carrier
- Does the account have secure drop yards or customer parking we can use?
- Do you pay for reserved parking?
- On dedicated routes: where do drivers usually take their 10-hour break?
Dedicated and local jobs avoid most of this problem, which is one reason they are popular.
