Why most drivers do not trust recruiters (and why they are right)

Straight talk from a recruiting company about what goes wrong in trucking recruiting, and what you should demand.

By the Better Today recruiting team · October 2026 · 2 min read

We are a recruiting company, so this may sound strange: most drivers are right to be skeptical of recruiters.

What drivers tell us happened to them

Behind most of these stories is the same problem: many recruiters are paid when you show up at orientation, not when you stay. That rewards saying yes to everything.

What a good recruiter should do

  1. Tell you the downsides first. Night starts, slip seats, touch freight, weeks out.
  2. Use real numbers. Averages called averages. "Up to" called "up to".
  3. Check your record against the carrier's rules before you apply. Tickets, accidents, DUI, job history.
  4. Put the key terms in writing before you travel to orientation.
  5. Call you after orientation and want to know if the job matched the promise.

What you should demand

If a recruiter cannot answer those, walk away. That includes us. We wrote our six promises on the home page so you can hold us to them.
