Being a trucker and being there for your kids used to feel like a choice. It does not have to be.
The home-friendly job types
| Job type | Usual home time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Local / pickup and delivery | Every day | Often hourly. Early starts are common. |
| Dedicated (one customer) | Daily or several nights a week | Predictable routes and schedules. |
| Intermodal (rail containers) | Usually daily | Short runs between rail yards and warehouses. |
| Yard / shuttle | Every day | Lots of hooks, little highway. |
| Regional | Weekly or weekends | More miles, home on a schedule. |
Right now 202 jobs in our database are home daily and 184 are home weekly. The typical home-daily job advertises about $1,390 a week.
What to watch out for
- "Home daily" with a 4 AM start may still mean you miss breakfast. Ask about start times.
- Weekend work. Some local jobs rotate Saturdays.
- "Home weekly" vs "home weekends": one 34-hour reset at home is not the same as two full days.
- Distance from the terminal. A local job 70 miles away is a long day.
Our advice
Tell your recruiter your non-negotiables first: the days you must be home, the latest you can get back. A good match starts with your schedule, not with the job ad.
