Home time causes more broken promises in trucking than pay. Usually because the words mean different things to the recruiter and to you.
The decoder
| What the ad says | What it often means |
|---|---|
| Home daily | Back at your home or terminal every day. Start times can be very early or overnight. |
| Home nightly | Same as daily, usually with an evening return. |
| Home weekly | One reset at home each week, often 34 hours. It may be a Tuesday, not a weekend. |
| Home weekends | Home most Saturdays and Sundays. Ask what "most" means. |
| Home every 2 weeks / 2 on 1 off | Out about two weeks, home a few days. |
| Out 3 weeks or more | Typical OTR. Home time usually accrues by days out. |
Questions that pin it down
- Which days am I usually home, and from what time to what time?
- How often in the last three months did drivers on this account get home on schedule?
- Where do I park the truck when I am home?
- Is home time paid or unpaid?
Our rule
We write the home time we promise in plain words before you apply, and we call after orientation to check it matches. If it does not, we want to know. Right now 202 jobs in our database are home daily and 184 are home weekly.
