Skills test waivers, GI Bill training and what carriers look for in veterans moving into trucking.

Skip part of the CDL test

Most states take part in FMCSA's Military Skills Test Waiver program. If you drove heavy military vehicles recently and meet the requirements, your state may waive the CDL skills (driving) test. You still take the knowledge tests. Ask your state licensing agency for the current form and deadline.

What to tell a recruiter

Our advice

Treat your military driving like any other experience: write it down with dates and equipment. It can count toward the experience carriers require, and in some programs it helps you move to better pay faster.
