"AI in trucking" jumped to number 7 on ATRI's 2026 list of the industry's biggest issues, up from 10 a year earlier. For drivers it ranked even higher, at number 6. So what is actually changing in the cab?
1. Cameras that talk back
AI dash cameras now watch the road and, on many fleets, the driver. They flag following too close, phone use, rolling stops and drowsiness, and many give an alert in the moment instead of a scorecard at the end of the month.
What to ask before you sign:
- Is there a driver-facing camera? Is it always recording or only on events?
- Who reviews the video, and can you see it and dispute it?
- Do camera events affect bonuses?
A good camera program can clear you after a crash that was not your fault. A bad one feels like a supervisor in your passenger seat.
2. AI on the breakdown line
Some fleets now use an AI agent to take breakdown calls: it collects the details and opens the repair order. Faster, if it works. Ask if you can still reach a person 24/7.
3. Dispatch and planning
AI is moving into load planning, route planning and driver schedules. Done well, it means less waiting for a load and fewer dead-head miles. Done badly, it means a computer that does not know you need to be home Thursday. Your home-time agreement should be in writing, not in an algorithm.
4. Paperwork
Invoices, bills of lading and PDFs are being read by AI instead of typed in by hand. That speeds up pay for owner-operators and cuts errors on settlements.
What AI does not replace
Backing into a tight dock, chaining up on a mountain pass, dealing with a receiver who changed the plan, securing a flatbed load. Those are still human jobs, and they pay. See our take on driverless trucks and your job.
How we use AI
We use AI to read your profile and voice message and check it against the real hiring rules of each carrier, so we only call you about jobs you can actually get. A real recruiter still makes the call. Try the 2-minute voice profile.
